About Us

Welcome to the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) at the University of Ghana.
As a key part of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, the School of Biological Sciences provides students with opportunities to explore and realize their potential across diverse areas of science. Through our well-established and emerging academic programmes, we are committed to equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an ever-evolving national and global landscape.

The Departments within the School play a pivotal role in preparing first-year students of the Medical School, and Dental School. In addition, the School hosts a significant number of international students, including many at the postgraduate level. The School is actively engaged in various research and development initiatives, notably the World Bank–funded West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP). The Centre provides advanced training at the Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral levels, while conducting cutting-edge research in cell and molecular biology, with a focus on major diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.

 

The Department of Marine and Fisheries Science also hosts the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) Project. MESA is a pan-African initiative that harnesses Earth Observation (EO) data to develop products and services aimed at strengthening information systems, management, decision-making, and planning capacities across African countries. The programme is implemented through seven Regional Implementation Centers (RICs), one of which is the ECOWAS Coastal and Marine Resources Management Center, based at the University of Ghana.

The School is also equipped with modern scientific instrument including Next-generation sequencing machines, Confocal microscope, X-Ray defractometer, Elisa Plate Reader, Water Quality Probe, Sea Bottom Camera device just to mention a few. The School of Biological Sciences together with the School of Agriculture run the African Regional Programme in Insect Science. This is an interdisciplinary programme, which is aimed at training the next-generation of Insect Scientists in Africa.

 

The Objectives of the School are to:

  • Offer students the opportunity to discover and fulfil their potential in various fields of science.
  • Improve academia and industry collaboration to achieve the University’s goals.
  • Endeavour to have more postgraduate programmes and improve on our postgraduate intake.
  • Bring existing and new academic programmes that are geared towards preparing the students for careers in this changing national and international world.
  • Collaborate with other Universities both locally and internationally in all aspects of academia.

Office of the Dean

Prof. Francis Gbogbo is a Professor of Biodiversity and Conservation Science. He obtained his BSc from the University of Ghana, an MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Strathclyde, and a PhD in Wildlife and Range Management from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. His research interests include wetland ecology and management, environmental toxicology and food safety, and species responses to land-use change.

Prior to his appointment as Dean of the School of Biological Sciences, he held several academic and administrative leadership positions including Hall Master of Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall, School Examinations Officer, and Departmental Examinations Officer. He has also served on numerous university committees, including the Business and Executive Committee, the Board of the School of Graduate Studies, the Joint Examiners Board, the Residence Board, and the Housing Committee.

Prof. Gbogbo is a biodiversity and environmental specialist with over 20 years of experience in university teaching, research, and environmental consultancy. He has contributed to numerous Environmental and Social Impact Assessment reports across the mining, railway, oil and gas, irrigation, and road sectors. In addition, he has actively contributed to environmental decision-making at the national level through his engagement with governmental, non-governmental, and academic institutions.

History of SBS

The School of Biological Sciences (SBS) was established in August 2014 following the University of Ghana’s adoption of the collegiate system of governance. Prior to this restructuring, SBS operated under the former Faculty of Science of the University of Ghana. The Faculty of Science was subsequently reorganized into the present School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences.
