Message from the Dean
Greetings and welcome to the School of Biological Sciences (SBS)!
We are delighted to have you visit our website. The School of Biological Sciences is one of the constituent schools of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) at the University of Ghana. In the School of Biological Sciences, we foster an environment where faculty, staff, and students thrive in an atmosphere of academic freedom, mutual respect, and collaboration. Our faculty are not only highly accomplished but also approachable, supportive, and deeply committed to the success and well-being of our students.
The School of Biological Sciences comprises five departments:
- Animal Biology and Conservation Science (ABCS),
- Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology (BCMB),
- Plant and Environmental Biology (PEB),
- Marine and Fisheries Sciences (MFS), and
- Nutrition and Food Science (NFS).
In addition to our core programmes, these departments provide essential basic science courses to the Medical School, Dental School, and the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences.
The School hosts a significant number of international students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It actively collaborates with industry as well as local and international universities in teaching and research. Through these partnerships, the School engages industry stakeholders by providing contract research and consultancy services that address pressing issues such as conservation, pollution, environmental sustainability and climate change, nutrition, food processing and technology, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and natural products.
In addition, our collaboration with industry creates valuable opportunities for students to gain practical experience through internships, national service placements, and potential employment.
Admission into the School of Biological Sciences is highly competitive, yet our application process is fair and transparent, with students admitted strictly on merit.
